Thread: Guess the finish

    Default Guess the finish

Just got a thrift store baglama, or saz if you like. The bowl is hollowed out from one piece of (probably mulberry, but could be anything). I don’t know how they keep these things from cracking, but they do.
It’s a low-end instrument, I think, and fairly new. The gloss finish is detaching on the bowl. Three questions.
For something like this from Turkey, what’s the likely finish?
Strip? Sand? Just take off what’s loose?
Then finish with what? Nothing critical or important, just a sonic experiment!

    Default Re: Guess the finish

First, I'd be surprised if the back wasn't made from staves, rather than a hollowed out chunk of wood. But without any photo that's just conjecture.
To determine the finish, test an area [perhaps where it's delaminating] with alcohol. If it softens it's likely shellac-based. If alcohol just clouds it but acetone or lacquer thinner attack it it's lacquer. If nothing affects it that would indicate a cross-linked finish such as polyurethane.
Once we know what you're dealing with, meaningful suggestions will follow.
