    Default Weird sound?

My mandolin is making a weird new noise. I’m new so it might be something basic but it’s new and doesn’t sound like it should be there. It sounds like it’s coming from headstock. I tried to capture it but you can hear people talking sorry!

Make sure the screws are tight on the tuners. I had a noise at the headstock and it was related to a loose holding the tuner one.

Try tightening the two screws that hold the truss rod cover on , or take it off, then you can check the truss rod nut too. If your tailpiece has a cover, check that, they are the most common culprit.

Could also be the nut slots on those e-strings, at least that is what I hear, some vibrations of the string not seated properly.

Mix baking soda and super glue and fill in the slots-let dry-fast and recut them correctly.

Nevermind, now its back on the A strings. What the heck. I tightened all of them and then loosened it a little when I heard it on the A, but can't get it to go away. Interestinggggg

Try weaving a piece of leather or something similar between the strings between the bridge and the tailpiece and between the nut and the tuners;... It my be what's called sympathetic vibration: its when the strings vibrate in the above mentioned areas.

If you are hearing a weird sound, check to be sure you aren't accidentally playing a banjo!

So what's a "weird sound?" Is it a rattle, a buzz, a squeal, a ringing overtone? I'm not familiar with any component of a mandolin that could be called "weird," but hey, I'm no expert...

If we could get the type of sound ID'ed, might help produce a slightly improved long-distance diagnosis.

Mute each piece of metal, one by one, as you pick - this will enable identification of the source of the extraneous vibration. Sounds like a loose screw or something - perhaps at the truss rod cover?

Yeah - I wish I'd made such an entrance!

One of my mandolins made a weird sound from the head stock. Turned out to be the tuner...
