    Default Video: The Princess

I’ve had the pleasure of the company of both my daughters over the holidays. The day before daughter #1 left we sat down to record this tune which she learned from fiddler Jenna Moynihan. I’m playing a Northfield Octave mandolin. We shortened the name of the tune...you can find the full name, sheet music and more at https://thesession.org/tunes/4577

    Hope you all like it!

Love that throaty cello coming in on the drone. Nice pulse to your music. Wonderful.

Thanks, Jim. I wish we could do it more often, but my daughters are so rarely home any more

A little more fiddle in the mix please. (Maybe raise the mic higher...). Wonderful music. Everyone is right. You are blessed with talented daughters!

Thanks, Doug. Maybe I could have done better with the mic placement, but it was a kind of one shot deal...we had little time to record and the fiddling daughter had sliced her index finger cutting veggies a couple of days before and was bleeding over her fiddle fingerboard by the time we were done! Next time....!

    Hi Pete

Sorry for only just getting around to commenting now; I've been meaning to chip in my tuppence worth for a few days.

That arrangement brought me out in goose pimples. I'm a big fan of drones as accompaniment to music. (In fact I caught my partner's eyes glazing over a few nights ago when I found myself blethering on about how I love the way Lankum use drones - accordion drones, pipe drones, harmonium drones, fiddle drones, etc - to great effect in some of their recordings and performances.) And therefore when the cello first makes an appearance, and later when your daughter moves away from the melody line to play a few bars of single note accompaniment, I was really moved. And I love that although the barndance is "arranged", it's not fancy - it doesn't take liberties with the tune. Gorgeous listening and I think the three of you have struck the vein here with a new genre of "chamber trad".

    In friendship.

That's mighty nice of you to say, Aidan....I passed your thoughts on to my kids....I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'll have to check out Lankum..I'm not familiar.
Here are a couple more, in case you're interested(with Talia on bass instead of cello):

    Hi Pete...

You're very lucky to have such a talented brood who share your taste in music. I'll drop you a direct message with a link to my version of the Irish reel Speed The Plough and I'll also give you a few links to some Lankum material which you might find interesting (just by way of illustration of the "drone" arrangements I mentioned above). I don't want to post the links into this thread as they'd only serve to divert away from your family's music and that just wouldn't be right!

Anyway, as they say in my neck of the woods, maith thú. (Roughly, good on you!)

Grey Owl is such a great tune! But all your videos are great. Everyone should have a family band like that (I can't convince my wife to play anything, and my son is too young).

I second the recommendation of Lankum.

The Gypsy Princess is one of my favourite tunes - lovely playing all round! The cello sits so nicely in the tune. We have a wonderful young trad cello player here in Ireland, Sharon Howley, an uncommon instrument in trad circles but the combination of droning and melody playing is a real treat!
