    Default Favorite Metronome

I am on the hunt for a new metronome and am curious if there is a consensus on a favorite brand or style. Also curious how many people just use an app on there phone.

I am almost embarrassed to say, but I have been playing now for about 7 months and never thought I needed one. I now feel like a metronome would be a useful tool to me.

    Thank you, Doug

I like this one a lot not a lot of bells and whistle’s but a nice loud woody sounding click

I actually enjoy practicing with a metronome, and believe it is helping me to advance. I use an app on my phone, called the mandolin companion. Not that this app is my favorite metronome app, I don’t know. I just happen to have it, and use the app only for the metronome.

If there was a better app metronome, I would be interested. I just haven’t taken the time to search it out...

That is the one I use. I also use a drum machine. Very important tool for building speed. PLay your scales and increase the speed on the metronome as you progress.

Pick it up on e bay for short money, takes a 9 volt battery, that lasts forever.

There's a Matrix MR 600 on e bay for 25 bucks, a much better unit than the 500.

Drum machines are great and fun to play to though a metronome
has its own benefits. One great thing to do with a drum machine is put on
a 2/4 beat country track and “hide the snare” with your chop....great practice

The late great and still sorely missed around here John McGann had a instructional DVD on how to use a metronome. I had but I guess I sold it. It was very cool. One thing to advance to is playing a metronome on 2 & 4. Then it starts to feel more like accompaniment. Not easy to do. John gave a tip on how to do this so does the also late and great Emily Remler on her 1st jazz guitar instructional video.

For PC (I'm not a phone guy)

    http://www.chordpulse.com/pc-virtual-metronome.html
simple no frills. Use it everyday. And it's free.

    https://strummachine.com
So much more than a metronome, but can be used that way.

Also more than a metronome. It's pretty cool.

I use a free app on my phone. The only problem I have with it is when I want to run another page/app, like a lead sheet or lyric sheet, it doesn't work. Having "another gizmo kicking around" would make a lot of sense.

    Following for recommendations.

The app Metronomerous is my present go to. It can do different beats which works for things liks Swedish polska rhythm. Also still have a small wind up Wittner and an ancient digital Seiko DM-10. The Seiko fits in any case and has a silent mode which is nice as the click is loud.

I prefer having a fully analog metronome. It makes sure that nothing distracts me while I practice.
I absolutely love the Wittner Taktell Super-Mini. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000I6KE4S..._h7E-FbPMDQKAP
I have the red one and it fits in my case. No batteries needed!

Lots of apps for lots of extremely basic metronomes.

This one’s set for playing a jig with what I think of as an Irish feel to it.
Speed it up if you like.
    Enjoy!

I like that one too and went through others. I hate the mechanical ones and I also have one of the old black box ones. The Seiko has the right amount of click, has a light too (if you prefer visual beats) and fits in my case. I prefer the higher pitched click. Very simple to operate

I have Metronome+ on my phone. My wife has a nice Wittner on the piano. Both work fine. I found the App looking for one that Eric Skye has/likes, but I couldn’t find it in the App Store.

Wittner MT-50 - recommended to me by a drummer because of its loud beefy sound that cuts through whatever you have going on.

I use a cheap & cheerful Aklot AMT-560 tuner/metronome that I got from ebay. Works well as a metronome, even gives you a flashing light and sweeping metronome hand, I think it was around a fiver.

One of the beautiful things about this community is the sharing of everyone's experiences. I've never considered a drum machine for this purpose but I may have to give it a go.

I bought a KLIQ MetroPitch metronome/tuner a little over 3 years ago. It had more bells and whistles than what I needed, so I veered away from using it. Doesn't matter now, though, since it died on me a couple of months ago. Tried the online versions for both desktop and iPhone, too, but the beeping grates on my nerves while practicing. It's already bad enough that there's no forgiveness when using one .I guess I'm used to what I grew up with - old-style - that has more of the woody tik-tok. Currently, I'm eye-balling the Wittner 836 Piccolo metronome as my next purchase.

I use the notation software MuseScore, using a drum track. It has the advantage that I can write beats for tunes with uneven meters (e.g. Gankino Horo: 2/2/3/2/2), which most metronomes won't do. Another example would be Jim Sutherland's "Radical Road" which comes out looking like this:

    And sounds like this:
    RadRoad.mp3

In case anyone wants to use this, there are 2 Bars lead in, the tune repeats 3 times, here are the dots:
