    Default Fitting a backstrap overlay

I'd like to put a backstrap on a neck I'm making and can't figure out exactly how you fit one. Looks like the headstock is thinned, and a ramp is made in the neck shaft. What I want to know is how to accomplish that accurately.

Any advice? I've done some searching and have found plenty on using backstraps for headstock repair, but nothing detailed on how to properly prepare the neck to receive it.

Hve you seen Frank Ford's frets.com? I believe he has some nice articles about backstraps.

That's about the long and short of it yes. The way I do it is to use a spindle sander with a fence to get the headstock to final thickness, and then the same sander without the fence to shape the transition from headstock to neck. As long as everything is good and smooth with no sudden changes of direction you should be good. Then bend the rear overlay to as close a match as you can get, and clamp the heck out of it when you glue.
