Check out this Blue Comet on Craigslist:

There have been a few threads on these. Unfortunately, somebody posted up on Wiki that these were made by Regal and it has stuck as the default reality. They were made by United of New Jersey in the 1940s and some were retailed by United with the company's name on the headstock- although most were sold under third party names- many being Peter Sorkin brands. The pickguard was also used on other United mandolins and is a good identifying feature for that company's mandolins.

Here is just such a mandolin- the pickguard is partly present and the seller is dreaming regarding its value.

    What "resonator?"

The manufacturer just drilled a bunch of "screen holes" around the perimeter of a cheap mandolin. The "resonator" Blue Comets at least have a body that looks like it has a separate resonator, complete with screen holes, though I don't believe it's separate from the rest of the body.

And, three of the screens missing...

I had one of the ones with the “resonator” years ago. It was all laminated IIRC.
