    Default Dubova tenor guitar

A while back I asked Michael Dubova if he would be interested in building me a tenor guitar. He hadn’t done one, but was was keen to try. He really is great to work with and receptive to my ideas through the whole process.

I do a lot of hiking and have a love of the Adirondacks, and I was interested in using all woods that could be found there; Adirondack spruce (naturally), black walnut and maple. Michael chose the walnut for the back because it resembled a topographic map, and surprised me with the fantastic peg head inlay.

    I couldn’t be happier!

A lovely instrument. The bookmatched walnut back is really lovely and it sounds great too.

Michael’s video and description of the 000 body made me wonder: is there an optimal (or suboptimal) body size for a flattop acoustic tenor?

Well it depends where you want the bridge and how long the scale is but if you want a 23” scale with the bridge in the middle lower bout, then there will be an optimum size.
21’’ scale normally have smaller body's to keep the bridge in the conventual place.

I made a tenor based on a Martin style 1. To me it is the best looking and best sounding.

My Newton tenor is a Size 2 which has always struck me as a good compromise.

Very cool. I follow Michael on the ole social medias and am always impressed with his instruments and his propensity to trying different things with his instruments. I am surprised there aren't a lot more posts here on the Cafe about him and his mandolins.
