    Default Vitti 'Na Crozza

The song was a leitmotiv of Pietro Germi's movie "Il cammino della speranza."
In 1950, Pietro was in Sicily to start filming his movie. One day at Favara,
where shooting was taking place, a miner, Giuseppe Cibardo Bisaccia recited
to Germi a folk poem, which began "Vitti 'na crozza supra nu cannuni..."
Germi, fascinated, asked Franco Li Causi to write the music.
The song became the soundtrack of the film.

Lyrics translated (from Sicilian) into Italian and English on this page

    Love It.
This tune is played as an instrumental by the title Sciuri-Sciuri on the album Mandolino by the San Domenico Barbers of Taormina. My absolute favorite Italian Mandolin record. Exquisite.
    Thanx for posting.

Thanks Joe B, I found the album "Mandolino by the San Domenico Barbers of Taormina" in archive org, can be downloaded as a 24-bit flac file and as mp3 files.

I thought this tune was "Sciuri scuiri".

    I like them both.

You’re right, David. When I first heard the Vitti track it reminded me of one of the Barbers tunes. They are different. I never heard a vocal of Sciuri.
    Thanx, bro, for clarifying.
Jairo, cool you found an mp3. I have the vinyl (2 copies) that I digitally dubbed. The mp3 might be cleaner. Still, I love the record.

    No problem, Joe!

I rather love that style of Sicilian music.

Yeah, I realized that later. The page 2 doesn't seem to exist.

I'm so glad to see people enjoying Vitti 'Na Crozza! At 14:39 is my friend Kathy Sherak singing a shortened version of the song. Besides being a great mandolin player with the Aurora Mandolin Orchestra, Kathy has studied several of the Italian dialects such as Sicilian and Neapolitan in depth. These are not easy to learn! Please enjoy!

I downloaded. I mostly enjoyed. Unfortunately, whoever did the digitization erred in splitting "Thais" between tracks 14 and 15. Some track is evidently missing, probably from side B, but I haven't teased out which yet.

It's strange, I download the 24BIT flac files and the VBR mp3 files and they are all complete...

Listening a bit more, the piece labeled "Malia" is actually the "Tarantella di Amuri." I suspect the piece labeled "Mazzurca Siciliana" is actually "Malia," but I don't know the latter's tune. I'd wager that the piece labeled "Serenata" is actually the "Mazzurca Siciliana." The piece labeled "Pastorale Siciliana" certainly seems to be. So, perhaps "Serenata" was somehow lost in the digitization process in the inadvertent splitting of "Thais"?

I downloaded the VBR mp3, and they sound exactly as the on-page player. I may try the flak.

I should clarify. The track labeled "Tarantella di Amuri" is actually the first half of "Thais."

Thanks again, Jairo. I've downloaded the flac files and am in the process of slicing them into correctly divided and named individual mp3 tracks.

In parsing out the two by-album-side flac files, I've sorted out the problem with the above-linked Barbers album. The piece named simply "Tarantella" in the mp3 files and on-page player (band one of the album's second side or track 9 overall) lumped together the side's opening tarantella and "Pastorale Siciliana" as one long mega-track. Thus, all titles to follow were misplaced by one: That labeled "Pastorale Siciliana" is actually "Serenata"; that labeled "Serenata" is actually "Mazzurca Siciliana"; and so on until the piece labeled "Tarantella di Amuri," which is actually the first half of "Thais," and the piece labeled "Thais" is only its second half.

The vinyl album they digitized is in pretty good shape, but I took this opportunity to also suppress occasional static pops throughout. I'm pleased with the end result. I really enjoyed hearing this album. Thus, thanks once again, Jairo.

I’ve watched this evolution you guys have had to go through on the Barbers LP. Unfortunate it was such a hassle. I could have offered to send you my digital dub of the album, but didn’t know if that would be taboo because of copyright issues. It was dubbed from my LP that is in good condition, so the dub sounds good to me. Anyway, glad I could turn others on to it. I love it, it’s got heart & soul.
Sorry, if this has hijacked the thread.
