    Default New Mandolin Day!

After 16 years long years of hard playing on my beloved Old Wave A5, I'm finally upgrading to my dream mandolin-an Ellis Twin-Point Special. UPS tracking says it's on the truck RIGHT NOW, and I cannot contain my excitement! I had to share with you guys.

Now, for the real question: how do you pass the time while it's coming up to temperature after shipping? How do you keep your hands off it?
    My Instruments:
    Ellis Twin Point #524
    My beloved Old Wave #83
    Herb Taylor Bouzouki #228
    Mid-Mo M1 #4321 and M14 #176 (my first mandos)
    Scuderi #001 OM Model Guitar
Plus a fiddle, a viola, a cello, another guitar, and (worryingly) three bagpipes.

Hmmmm...maybe play your Old Wave and talk to it softly...lie to it and say that you'll be back to play it often...

Pick a tune (or tunes) you hope will sound great on the Ellis, work on it till it’s as good as possible, so you can compare and enjoy it on the Ellis. You want to be knocked out, right?

    That’s what I would do.

I'm jealous about the Ellis. Keeping your fingers warm on that A5 should help pass the time. That way you'll be ready to pull and play when it's time to unpack.

The Ellis two point mandolins are drool worthy. The oval one at the Mandolin Store sure caught my eye.

    Play it in good health!

My fiancee will be taking over the Old Wave, so it'll get plenty of play still. It's a big upgrade over her old army-navy style Flatiron with some separation at the seams.

EDIT: It just arrived. Sitting in my office right now. So the temperature equalization torture begins

Tom, remember when I told you at Steve's camp that I'd be ordering from you? I didn't expect it to happen so soon! Steve says I ought to wait. It's ok, I've got lots of work to do, it'll be a great treat once it's all done.

It was really cold in NM last night. Although, if your mandolin had spent the night in a truck outdoors, the truck would have been emptied, stripped, and up on blocks by morning, no? So it was probably indoors, but the UPS warehouse might not be very well heated. Play it safe.

Congratulations, and we want photos and a video soon!

    Congratulations and happy picking!

I've only played a very small few Ellis mandolins, they were all excellent!

I'm about to go into a zoom meeting until at least 4:30. The case is sitting out on my desk taunting me.

Congratulations on the Ellis! Cant wait to see it and hear it!

I have a question though. What does it really hurt to open the box?Might have to tune it a couple times but is opening the box right away really gonna ruin it? Maybe I’m naive, but I travel for a living and my expensive good instrument goes everywhere with me straight from the car to hotel room and I don’t wait any set amount of time to open the case. I am just curious peoples opinions on this, this is not meant to be derogatory.

I would of ripped that box open 30 seconds after it hit my front porch, and been pounding on it two minutes later!

    Have fun with that Ellis!!

I have been through that same agony, with an Ellis twin point delivered at my office in the middle of a working day. Your patience will be rewarded!

What I've been told is that sometimes, under the right (or is that wrong?) circumstances, you can crack/spiderweb the finish if there's too quick a thermal change. I'm hoping this will be my mandolin for life, so I'm taking an abundance of caution. It's probably fine, especially since Tom says so.

All that being said, my meeting just ended, so look for pics and a recording fairly soon!

Here's a very quick and dirty recording, but I think it's enough to show how great this thing is.
    https://soundcloud.com/plamadude30k/ellis524

The tone is so clean and smooth, and I can hear (and maybe feel?) just an absolute ton of potential. It's SO LOUD, I can hardly believe it, and the sustain-I think it's still ringing from that last chord.
