Default The Celtic Mandolin - Tunes for January

    Hi folks

I've posted some new tunes this month on my Tune of the Week page. As well as helping intermediate level players learn some great tunes you could look at these as kits for small groups of mandolin, starting points for playing together. Hope you enjoy them.

    11. Sord Cholmkille
    Another ripping Irish polka.
    12. The Thornton Jig
    An elegant Scottish jig.
    13. The Lakes of Sligo
Irish Polka, the last of four that I've posted recently. I've posted the whole set of four polkas on the front page of the site.
    14. The Carle he came o'er the craft
The tune for a well known song from the Aird's Collection (1782 app?)
    15. Michael Gregory's
This is a tune by the Mandolin Cafe stalwart, another one mad for the mandolins, Aidan Crossey. He runs a great resource for those wanting to learn Irish style mandolin and delve into the great Irish tradtion (www.theirishmandolin.com). Many thanks to him for allowing me to post this tune.

I'm delighted to have made John's acquaintance and to have had a few email conversations with him over the course of the past few days. A lovely start to 2021 - to meet someone, albeit online, with very similar musical interests...

Oh and of course I'm delighted that my tune made an impression on him. I never know when I write a tune how it will land with people. So I'm over the moon that John saw fit to arrange and record the tune so tastefully. The more so since the tune is a tribute to Michael Gregory, who many people who frequent the Mandolin Cafe will know as a long-time advocate of the cause of the mandolin as a vehicle for Irish music.

Thanks again, John. Pleased to have met you...

Yes, I am a big fan of Michael Gregory's well. Nice guy and a wonderful mandolin player. I must learn that tune.
