Default A good reason to have more than one mandolin

I was playing my Stradolin this afternoon, put it down for a second and heard a loud SPRONG. E string slipped off the post. I have new strings for it, and have been putting off changing them (haven't done it yet on this mandolin), but I felt like playing a mandolin, not changing strings on one.

So I put it back in it's case and took out the Morris and kept playing

For me, mandolins are like good fly rods and steel bicycles. Impossible to own only one

That's why I have five. If I was to break a string on all of the first four I would still have one more to play! My wife doesn't understand my logic.

Once I get my fingers round this wood one, I'll probably get a carbon one for playing outside in the sun and rain, playing tennis with and suchlike.

I am fascinated by the sound of this A model 1924 in the video but wonder if they all sound like this or it's just a one off.

Please report back,if I should start saving. ;-)

Having more than one is cool. Unless one needs to change strings on them. Then it's time consuming and makes one start to doubt sanity.

Of course, a number of my friends around here that are seriously good on mandolin only have one. And they make that work, too.

Pre 1921, I don't know models. I'm sure better information will be forthcoming as the serial number is legible.

You'll be able to tell better once you see the Factory Order number, which should be stamped inside the body near the neck block. Per the serial number it's 1920. That's according to Spann's Guide to Gibson, 1902-1941.

When I bought my Ellis, I had every intention of selling my Collings. Now it looks highly unlikely and I'm already thinking about what's next!

Not as high end as yours, but when I bought my Mid-Mo mandola, I told my husband I would sell my Kentucky (1st mandolin). Then I got thinking it would be good for travel. After awhile he said, "You aren't planning on selling that are you?" Ah, well, I guess not.

I just started and can(almost) play 4 tunes on my 4 mandolins, so I'll have to learn one more tune, so I can convince myself I need a Gibson A oval.

I have an A with F holes, an A with oval hole, an F with F holes and a mandola, You can't have less than that!!

It's not really that bad, the 2 Horas and the Kentucky was only 150$ each, the Richmond 500$ but I sold 5 older mandolins, incl. 2 Levins, so..........

As noted above, it was built in 1920. It's an A-2. I have an 1919 A-2 that I love. I'm betting that you'll love that one.

    Is there a bad reason. . . ?

I have two mandolins, either of which would be more than fine if I only wanted to have one. I've recently started alternating between them every week, which is kind of fun. That may not be a reason in and of itself for two, but going back and forth between the tones might help me think of different ways to approach each tune. Or maybe that's just more rationalizing.

Yes and no. They don't all sound this good. Some sound even better!

I started out playing 'teens Gibson over fifty years ago, and have gone back to that again for the last dozen years or so. There was a long stretch of time when I was playing a late 1970s F-12, which never did develop the sound I like. I was quite unhappy when it was stolen, but I'm happier now with the oval hole A model. Even though it's not as nice as this one, it's got that well-rounded sound I like.

Different philosophy here. Not that I am against MAS.

I just know if I don't change the string right away, I will not get to it for a while, maybe a long while, as I would just play the other mandolin. So when a string breaks I am on it like changing a flat tire on the way to the airport, and get it done and get back to playing.

Once I get home, I change the rest of the strings, because I have found that if one breaks the others are about to. And one new bright string makes the other's dullness stand out.
