Howdy all. Hope everyone is healthy and C19 free. Ive always loved the engraved Collings tailpieces. Especially the partially engraved one. I have an extra Collings tailpiece and would love to the have some custom artistic engraving on it. Have any of you ever taken a tailpiece to that level yourselves or commissioned the work elsewhere?

Haven’t, but trophy and award shops all were forced into owning CNC engravers years ago. They can handle surfaces that are not flat, which is the ‘advance’ that made skilled hand-engraving of cups, etc. somewhat obsolete.
I had one of these shops put some (technical) patterns on an electrode.
If you give them something they can’t handle, they probably can refer you to an artisan who does handwork.

I can highly recommend Bob Rosser at https://hand-engravers.com/. He did a fantastic job on a custom hand engraved tailpiece for me not long ago --- excellent work. His pricing is fantastic too.

Look for local gun engravers, Weldon Lister surely is rooted in that tradition.
My good friend does that work it is his daily bread, all the techniques of deep scroll/leaf backgrounds gold inlays etc. He can do bulino portraits and some very artistic stuff as well in metal, bone, pearl. https://www.instagram.com/dusan_hronec/? but he is not in the US...
Mandolin tailpiece is simple job for these guys.
