    Default Surviving Lockdown

Lockdown isn't all bad. Among other things, I've learned to bake bread, built a new cupboard – and formed a mandolin orchestra. We still need a bit of tightening up but here's a Finnish polska we've been practising (which I learned in Rääkkylä, Finland in July 1997 –#if anyone knows the title and/or composer, please chime in...).

Despite appearances, you may rest assured that we were all positioned *precisely* 2m apart – we were also masked and did not play any non-essential notes. The members have, nevertheless, requested that their faces be concealed, for fear of being reported for flouting lockdown rules.

And you also managed to sit on the same chair and have that same accordion positioned just behind. What a well-desciplined set of musicians you have assembled there - are they all Welsh, and if so do they sing beautifully as well?

Seriously, I have found that my favourite haunt here, The Song-A-Week Group, has been keeping me sane and the activity there has certainly increased during lockdown. My collaborations have increased too. The joys of the internet.

Lovely tune and playing, by the way. Pass on my compliments to your orchestra members!

Yes, I keep six accordions at 2m intervals across my front room (which I myself find puzzling, as I live in a small terraced house that measures less than 10m in any direction, except possibly height).

I am not Welsh (yet), nor do I sing beautifully. It never occurred to me to ask the other five of them. I'll ask next time we meet – and will pass on your compliments.

Bravo that mystery man. (We've had the joke before about Mister E... let's not go there again. "But you just have!" Sorry. "And it wasn't particularly funny first time round." I know. "And yet you felt the need to repeat it?" Well, it was him started it, with all the sly humour about secrets. "Oh that's right. That's very childish. Blame Whistler, why don't you.")

Sometimes I just have to let the voices in my head out for a bit of fresh air... sorry about that.

Normal service is now resumed. And so, again, bravo that mystery man. Excellent stuff...

By the way, your band needs matching hats.

Thanks, Aidan. If I may return the compliment, I very much enjoyed your tunes and chat on the Blarney Pilgrims Podcast.

@MikeEdgerton: Don't you mean, "... your hats need matching bands"?

We do have matching hats – they're just out of frame.

So, "Surviving Lockdown." That's the name of this tune? Intriguing that there could have been such a tune existent in Finland when you lived there, that you found it, and learned it, and remembered it at such an appropriate time. All in all, quite fortuitous, even prescient.

Nicely done. My compliments to all!

You may indeed, sir. But I don't want to hijack your thread. So 'nuff said about that here. This is about you and the other guys in the band. Savage players, altogether!

Lovely! it made me channel my early 20s and my dip into medieval music and dancing.... so you need someone in the band to do some fancy footwork, as well as matching hat bands.
