Now I'm wondering about the difference between the Trinity College and Gold Tone mandolas? Anyone have experience with both of these to be able to make a comparison?

I have played neither. I have played a Trinity College octave mandolin, and own a “clone” of that one with a Fender label. The Trinity College Mandela has solid maple back and sides, while the Gold Tone has laminated mahogany. All other things being equal, I would choose solid wood over laminated.

I haven't played a Gold Tone mandola but my first dola was a Trinity College. It was a good starter & I got a good deal on Reverb. I also had a TC octave mandolin that I enjoyed so feel like they're a good value for the money.
Not played either as a mandola. However, I played a Trinity College and Gold Tone octave mandolin last year, when shopping with my son for an OM. The Trinity College was way better - deeper sound, more resonance, better tone, etc. We were both underwhelmed by the GT.
However - they weren’t mandolas.
Gold Tone should stick to banjos.
