    Default David Gilmore Mandolinist

I can't recall a Pink Floyd song with mandolin in it, but I don't really know the catalogue after The Wall

If you're having difficulty finding anything about this, it could partly be caused by misspelling his name. It's "Gilmour." "Gilmore" is how Lorelai and Rory spell their names.

This has come up hereabouts before. I learned that by googling, and the top response was this thread, no doubt due to Scott & Co. being so clever with their interwebbery.

That said, I don't recall mandolin on a Pink Floyd album, either. I also haven't followed them much since "The Wall." Many assert that was their high point; it was more the end of the line for me. Live is different, of course. That thread arose after an occurrence in 2011.

May be “statin’ the bleedin’ obvious”, as we say in these parts, but don’t the pictures suggest that he only played it live?

"Outside the Wall" mandolin on the album is credited to Trevor Veitch.

Trevor Veitch used to play electric guitar for Tom Rush. I was a huge Tom Rush fanboy back in the day. I used to play along to his albums when I was learning to play guitar back in the early seventies.

Obviously David and Roger were getting along better when those photos were taken. I don’t believe they are speaking anymore.

That was nearly ten years ago, when they reunited for a few shows - probably for a massive mound of moolah.

I'm aware of other musicians who play second and third instruments in concert, but who call in the experts for their recordings, so that may be the case with Gilmour.
Robert Johnson's mother, describing blues musicians:
"I never did have no trouble with him until he got big enough to be round with bigger boys and off from home. Then he used to follow all these harp blowers, mandoleen (sic) and guitar players."

It may well be thus, if one may assume his interest in the instrument is reflected in his choice of what to play for this one song, something of dubious quality.
