    It depends...

Lots of brands, lots of styles, range of quality, range of price.

What kind of music are you chasing, what kind of sound, are you going after, how are you intending to play. Many great mandolins are focused on a narrow kind of music, or kind of sound, or type of playing, and do a stellar job in their lane, but perhaps less than optimum in other lanes.
A talent for trivializin' the momentous and complicatin' the obvious.

I'd suggest you take a hard look at Ellis and Pava mandolins. Good luck. S

You need to get around to the guitar equivalent of Mandolin Cafe, umgf.com or acousticguitarforum.com. There are plenty of folks there that list their guitars. The ones that truly amaze me though are those who have collections of the same guitar like 12 D-18s. To each his or her own...

I have a feeling that the poster of "What is the best brand of mandolin to buy?" is a chatbot, at least it says that with a link to a site in Singapore in the signature.

I aver not sir, as just today he posted pics of himself at the factory in Kalamazoo. That's hard for bots to do.

Unless, of course, you mean the first of such posts, by someone with a male name and female avatar, in which case ... never mind.

But that's just my opinion. I could be wrong. - Dennis Miller

The Shmergel Devastator has long held that distinction.

But I have heard whispered tales behind closed curtains in darkened auditoriums. Shmergel is preparing to unleash the ne plus ultra, the zerstörerische kraft eines orkans, the banjo killer of banjo killers – the Shmergel Destruere!

Unfortunately, there will only be one – and I have been told that Allen Hopkins has somehow garnered the right of first refusal.

All rumors, mind you. But where there’s smoke, there’s bound to be a fireplace poker.

To quote Stan Jay "Only a Gibson is glued enough". Or "So is Boris". (That latter one made me think for a bit when I first read that Vintage News.)
