This thread is toast for sure. What derailed it was the usual, “Is it a circle of fifths or a circle of fourths” red herring. I’m sorry for my own contributions to the hijack. I have my position on the question. There are musical reasons for diminishing notes or intervals, and yes diminished notes are either flatted perfect interval notes, or flatted minor interval notes (flatted majors become minors). None of that is rocket science, but it’s in the realm that attracts music theory nerds and sometimes snobs. I think we’ve beaten it to death this time.

Furthermore, a diminished second is unison. G# = Ab. Unless there is some sort of microtonal approach being employed here.

Why not just say "a fifth?" People know what that is.

And I really don't know how this helps the OP at all. Indeed, it probably contributes to his confusion.
You can call it a misstatement, a typo, an error, a mistake, or anything else you want. It was not a deliberate lie. I corrected it three days later, which was the first day that I noticed it. I apologize again for any confusion that I caused.

The statement still stands: spelling matters. Enharmonic notes make different intervals.

This was all said in an answer to a later poster, not OP.

I actually did record a vid a couple of days ago, it’s a bit like Mark’s (great one) but mine was a bit too long.
Might just do a couple of workout, exercise vids with minimal explanation.

David, I’ve found no error in any of your comments besides the misstatement confusing diminished fifth with diminished sixth. As far as your earlier comment aimed at a quote from me about the diminished sixth having the same semitonal value from root as a perfect fifth, I acknowledged that the two are enharmonic equivalents, while pointing out that this has nothing to do with the fact that a fifth interval is measured in seven semitones whether ascending or descending. I make that point in regards to the fifths, going in both directions, in the circle of fifths (as analogously they do in mandolin tuning). What has any of that to do with diminished or augmented intervals?

Anyway, as usual, your grasp of music theory is spot on regards to the importance of spelling, etc.

As I said earlier, this thread has been derailed by the theory minutiae - derailed being a polite term for a train wreck, lol - and sadly I’ve helped to derail it as much as anyone has.

I don't think of threads being derailed, they are just on a new path. To quote George Harrison, "If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there".

That was one perspective I had, yet having looked back over this thread I think one could learn a lot from it including some practical advise pertaining to the OP
