If you had to replace an old "A" tailpiece with a new one. Which one would you recommend and not allow for keeping original looking, etc.? Just the best (for the money) tailpiece to put on it.

The closest one to the original voice, fit, and style would be the stainless steel Prucha stamped style. They are much thicker steel than the other copies. You should be able to use the Prucha base with your original cover. They are also very affordable. Greg Boyd usually has them in stock.
James ones look similar from afar, better up close..
Unless you mean the 'Cloud' type they used on many mandolins for years..
