Default Classifieds - Best Payment Options

There are some old posts on this subject, but I don't see anything recent.

I'm possibly purchasing an instrument through the classifieds. The buyer wants payment with Venmo or PayPal Friends and Family. There's no protection for me with either of those, based on what I have read. Are they trustworthy options, though, considering the ad runs in the MC classifieds? Or am I being naive?

You can't pay with cash when you get to Austin?
That sounds iffy to me. Though maybe he wants to save on fees. How about a non-refundable deposit (maybe $50) for surety with the remainder in cash on pickup?

Here's his message: Hopefully you received the pics. Let me know if you have any questions. If you would like me to "hold" it, you can purchase it via Venmo or Paypal Friends & Family and I'll hold it for you for pick up at your convenience. (shipping has gotten quite pricey lately -maybe not to Dallas from Austin - but happy to ship too) Thank you!

I personally wouldn't do that (Venmo or F&F).

Let's see what some more experienced folks say, but it leaves you with no protection, unless (maybe) you fund the payment with a credit card. I'd counter and say something like I understand you don't want to get hit with alot of fees but Venmo or F&F leaves me with no protection. I'm willing to make a nonrefundable deposit and pay you cash on pickup, and give a specific time.

Cafe rules also specify you're not supposed to ask for Venmo or F&F. Plus he's only ever had one previous ad.

Figure out the fee before you make that offer (regular paypal)

Do not use Venmo or PayPal Friends. Both are intended for family and friends, not business transactions, and therefore offer no protection to you.

If you negotiate the terms, be sure to emphasize you are serious about the mandolin and really want it. I've paid the paypal fee for things I've bought before. Nothing that big, though.

The classifieds guidelines warn against using Friends and Family. The fee for regular PayPal would be just $39 on a $1,300 purchase, so I'd offer to pick it up if I wanted that mandolin.

It isn't unreasonable for the seller to ask for the PP fees from the buyer. Scott T has many years of experience with these classifieds. I think it would benefit you to take advantage of that experience as outlined in the Classified Ads guidelines.

Thank you. I've just heard back from the seller and will check the guidelines before responding.

If the seller is a reasonable guy, he will understand that you want safety with Paypal. Offer to split the PP fee. If the mandolin is rare, cheap, what you always dreamt of, pay the extra 39$

There’s nothing to check. Pay the fee and get the protection.

I totally agree. It’s worth 3% extra for the protection. I also use a credit card through PayPal for double protection.

Yep! That's the way to go.
    Thanks

I don't think it matters at this point, but for future reference, I don't even leave any money in my PayPal account. It draws funds directly from the card. I vaguely recall it's set up as the equivalent of overdraft protection, but since it functions the same way, I don't even bother.

Jeff, I'm having that problem also! Yes, I got the WONDERFUL Weber! I've posted most of my remarks in the Newbies group, needing to do some catching up in these Forum threads.
