    Default Strap for Weber Gallatin

I've just purchased a 2015 Weber Gallatin from the MC classifieds, which I'm picking up on Saturday. I've just discovered it has no strap and no button for a strap. What do you suggest as my best option for adding a strap? Adding a button? Can any luthier do that?

Here is what I do. The photo is not a Gallatin but the construction is very similar - elevated fretboard being the most important similarity. Pickguard or not doesn't matter.
    Ingredients:
    1. Go to a Safeway or whatever and get a set of leather bootlaces.
    2. optional - get a standard mandolin strap

    Steps:
    1. Tie a noose knot in one end of one lace.
    2. Use the other lace to make a loop passing thru the noose, under the elevated fretboard, then down under the heel, then back to join the rest of the lace. Tie the loop with a square knot and trim the excess.
    3. Now you have a choice - a) you can join the lace with the noose to a standard mandolin strap of your choice. Or b) you can just tie a noose knot in the other end of that lace and snug it tight on the endpin - you'll have to do some trial and error to get the length right.
    4. When you realize how easy (and cheap) this is, you can invent all kinds of variations.

Following photo is one I have using a standard strap. I also have one where the lace goes all the way to the endpin.

Not a Gallatin...but here’s how I have my A style rigged with a standard mandolin strap:

I have a couple of these straps and love 'em - here's a wee video from their website that shows how to attach the strap at the headstock under the strings behind the nut if you don't have a strap button, and you can use the same method to attach one of their straps under the fretboard extension too: http://www.mandolinstrapsofmontana.com/419749117

To answer what I think is the question. If there is no button or fitting at the tailpiece, yes, one can be added that just replaces one of the screws that hold the tailpiece on; standard hardware. Or, if there’s an endpin of some sort, you’d use that location. Either way, I’d want to be sure the tailpiece was secure with the remaining screws before taking one out. (Sprong!). Note that an endpin, if there, is preferably a taper fit and might not be secure enough.
At the neck end, check the backside (the side not facing you) at the heel to see if there’s a little hole where a button might have been; if so, add button. I suppose that, on an expensive instrument, some would not suggest adding any holes, and so suggest the various lacing methods outlined above.
As a non-performer, and sitting down, I don’t need a strap, except for the banjolin, which just weighs too much and is hard to hold.

I think most Webers have a threaded endpin, so it will be a specific parts replacement. You might want to ask Bruce Weber directly

Turns out my new Weber does have an end pin! The seller gave me a really cool strap. I'm attaching a picture of it, along with some paracord my husband gave me. He can help me attach it to the headstock end. I presume the buckle should go at the headstock end?

    That’s a beauty Sherry! Congratulations!
I think I’d put the buckle at the end pin end just so it didn’t end up on my shoulder, but try both ways and see what fits you best.

Unless you intend to attach the strap every time you use it and detach it before putting the mandolin in its case, that buckle is probably the biggest threat to mar the finish of your Weber. While it looks cool and it’s hard to beat free, I’d use some of your saved budget on an alternative.

I agree with pheff. You could make one out of that paracord for now. It matches your case

Or maybe you could figure out the right length, take off the buckle, and sew it in place.

Happy new mandolin day! I bet it's loud! I'm really curious about that case. It's the only mando case I've ever seen that cradles the neck like that (I have electric guitar cases that do, but a double yoke is the closest I've ever seen in an acoustic case). Any clues as to the manufacturer of the case?

I hadn't thought about the strap damaging the instrument. Maybe I can find a way to prevent it. And, Don, good point about the buckle.

Rob, I'll check for a manufacturer when I play later today.

There's a tag that reads "CWW, Quality Cases, Made in Costa Rica."

IIRC, that’s the same outfit that makes Ameritage cases.
