Default Screw hole in veneer to big

    ^too.

The truss rod cover screw hole that is in the headstock veneer closest to the nut has become too big and will not hold the wood screw tight. I'm afraid that using a larger width of screw might only make the problem worse. I also think that using a toothpick to fill the hole will only make the veneer break away more. There is really no headstock wood beneath of the veneer at that spot. The veneer is the only thing that was holding that screw. Is there any type of filler, perhaps rubber that could be used to at least hold the screw tight? Thanks in advance

Does the screw only go into veneer or is there wood underneath?

Yes, many things will work. A dab of wood glue, gasket sealant, self-cure silicone rubber. None of these will prevent future removal. If you use something stronger, like epoxy, you’d have to re-drill for the screw after it’s hard or risk non-removal.

Use wood. Make a plug that will fit the hole and glue it in. You may need to do a little finish work.

It's only into the veneer. The slot for the truss rod is underneath it.

If its only in the veneer, its not holding much. You could fake it by only gluing on the screw head. Maybe some glue/mastic to hold the cover from moving around the other screw. Or a different cover with a square edge butted against the nut.

Could you post a picture? It would give a better idea of what we're trying to help you with.

Mike has it correct, glue in a piece of wood which will help stabilize the veneer. Then re drill the hole. You will have to carefully trim the top of the piece you glued in flush, but it will be covered by the cover so just be careful and go slow and you shouldn't need to do any finish work. You could use something like JB weld which will also secure the veneer and redrill after it is hard. There will not be much left to notice the color change, and again it will be under the truss rod cover.

I'll try to post a picture. There is very little room between the veneer and the truss rod nut.

A picture would really help. What about making a new truss rod cover so there would be 3 screws, the two closest to the nut on the outside edges where they could go into solid wood under the overlay veneer? Or make one long enough to butt into the nut so you might only need one screw?

That sounds like the truss rod cover is really short. Either that or it was mounted too far back. The pocket should be under the cover and the screw should be in solid wood. There are times that the back screw will be ground down so it is shorter.

Maybe you could get a new truss rod cover, slightly longer so that the screw hole ends up above solid wood? You would have to drill a new hole, very carefully because of the truss rod nut being there. The screw may have to be shortened so as not to bite into metal.

I like the idea of gluing just the screw head on it and letting the top screw hold it in place (if it lies flat and is tight enough). Here's one I own that it only secured by the top screw and it doesn't move around.

I wonder if you have enough room to insert a thin piece of wood under the veneer/headstock overlay?

Yes Jim, that is a great solution. But if it’s a plastic cover I would worry about it warping without the bottom screw to hold it. If I went for a solution like that, and if it were plastic, I would replace it with something that doesn’t warp. Pearl like yours, for example.

This is common problem on guitars or mandolins with double acting truss rod where no filler strip above rod is applied (or just thin venner). On the headstock end there is just empty space under the veneer.
I've seen cover with L shaped hook instead of screw that fitted into the lower hole and normal upper screw to hold it in place. I've seen magnets in the veneer and cover holding it in place.
Perhaps you can slip in a piece of wood to glue underneath the veneer to strengthen it and fill the hole with new wood.
