Well, the reason could be to add to a thread like Post a Picture of Yourself or some such. We are what we play, after all.
Say, are you sure that's a Christmas cactus, given the time of year? Could it be an Easter cactus?

There are both. The scientific name of Christmas cactus is Schlumbergera bridgesii The scientific name of Easter cactus is Rhipsalidopsis gaetneri. Both are native to Brazilian rainforests. We have a pot with both in it planted at home to get blooms in Nov-Dec and April-May.

Afraid mine were past bloom here - the one on the right is loveliest hue of faded pink
tmsweeney, that's a lovely cactus for sure. What's that funny looking little instrument called/
nice Catmandu2 - do you play that harp ?
and thanks JEStanek for the clarification, My wife has had that since forever and always called it a Christmas Cactus, it has bloomed in Dec-Jan but not this year, I assume it is a daylight length trigger but I also understand not all plants operate that way.
JourneyBear - that is a Martin Macica F5 crafted in Schuylerville NY in 2016, I bought it from Marty at the 2018 Freshgrass, he had a couple of different F5s and let me go around back of his booth to try them, and as I was playing this one, Sierra Hull walked by on her way to play and I said, well enough of a sign for me.
I like to play in the early morning and was working on Peter Ostroushko's "Katarina's Waltz" and somehow drifted over to Grisman's "DawgWood(also known as Dawg Patch)" and then into "Billy in the Lowground", I set the mando on the chair after my wife came down for coffee and as I was bringing her her cup, I caught this glimpse.I

Yes. I refurbished her last year - a neglected cast-off on ebay, last strung (incorrectly) with nylon. I strung it in yellow brass. There's a selkie carved in the pillar - I have a fur piece wrapped round her for when the grandkids are visiting.
I really like the lines on that mandolin - very cool.
There oughta be a song by that name. Maybe a Western swing or Tex-Mex number.

I have no idea why, but our Christmas cactus started blooming just before Thanksgiving this year and is still blooming. It had two sets of huge blooms, but has continuously had at least a few buds on it.
We moved it down to the bedroom in a good, south-facing window, so all I can ascribe it to is good light conditions.
