    Default Jimmy Gaudreaua

Just finished listening to Bill Emerson Home of the Red Fox (Rebel records Reb 1641 vinyl). Bill Emerson, Tony Rice just great stuff. But I just couldn't help but feel Jimmy Gaudreau just kinda stole the show. Might he be one of the most underrated mandolin players that didn't get his just recognition.

And nothing at all against Bill Emerson, Tony Rice, Jerry Douglas they were great on this recording. If you can give it a listen!

He may be a bit underrated - but largely because his bandmates tended to get more recognition. What are ya gonna do with talents like that right there commanding attention? And I'm as guilty as anyone, remembering him more from being from my home town (more or less) than his music. Yes, that's right, two mandolinists from such a small corner of the country. Go figure.

PS: You might still be able to correct that in the thread title - edit, then go advanced.

Saw Jimmy with the Tony Rice Unit a few times, he's the reason I bought my first Rigel!

Based on a Cafe recommendation when I first joined back in '08, I took a chance and found:

One of my all-time favorite albums. SO sparse (just 2 instruments, 2 singers) yet SO dense, with interweaving melody / counter-melody lines trading off between the four "voices". I still find it thrilling!

saw him in a house concert with Orrin Star right here in Richmond. Didn't know of him at all. (I went 'cause Orrin Star was my mandolin teacher when I lived in Boston in the mid-80's.)

    Both were just so great!

My all time favorite album as well... I made my first mandolin transcriptions from that one. Bill and Tony are excellent on the album as well.

ID:	193095 Loved his Country Gentlemen stuff and then just kept following his new ventures and bands. He never disappointed. Didn't much care when he got away from his F5 sound and picked up the Rigel but it was still great stuff. Sometime around 1988 I took lessons from him just to learn some of his great "licks" and pick up on his style. After a day of lesson, Jimmy said I was too far gone with my own style and did not go in a different direction. But we had a great time picking together.

Jimmy is a fine fellow and a super player. Didn't he go for a mandolin made by Jack O' Brian, while selling his Fern to John Paganoni?

He did have an O'Brien (note spelling) F-5, used it on this fine record.
