Anyone else get excited when they see the number 5 in the title of a classified ad here on the Cafe only to be utterly deflated when it turns out on closer inspection to be a banjo... or is it just me?

It's just you.
And most likely hundreds and even thousands of others.

I had a five string banjo.Took off the little string.
Just buy a 17" or 19" solid-body mini-guitar (at one-tenth the price of electric mandolin). Swap out the pickups for some Seymour Duncans or qualilty humbuckers, Remove the low E-string bridge saddle and tuner (to remove them from rattling) - voila instant 5-STRING ELECTRIC MANDO/MANDOLA
It's only a tuning on a short necked electric. That's all an electric 5-string mando is.
