Default In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning

I've been on a chord melody kick for a few months (Aaron Weinstein's stuff got me interested initially). A few days ago, I shot this video of a new arrangement of "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning."

    Here's the link: https://youtu.be/xxjbcGy-eGY

Has anyone else here recorded that piece? If so, please let me know. I'd love to compare notes.

    Thanks.

Nice arrangement! Nice tone - not a stock fender pickup?

    John,

On his YouTube channel he has a video showing the upgrade (Almuse) he made and a before and after comparison.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! It really means a lot.

It took me a while to get that tone (and I'm still experimenting), so I'll say a little bit about that. First, Mandrian is correct: I use an Almuse pickup and an RS Guitarworks Les Paul Jr. Harness. I would really like a Moongazer bridge so that I can have better control over the intonation, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere (I contacted the person who, I thought, originally manufactured them for Moongazer, but he wrote back and said he didn't have anything like that).

I have two amps: a Monoprice 15 watt tube amp and a Roland 60 watt solid state modeling amp. Both make different contributions to the tone so, after a few weeks of experimenting, it seemed like the best solution was to use both of them at the same time (through an EHX Switchblade). The Monoprice is set up to get as thick and warm a sound as possible, and the Roland adds a little bit of edge and shimmer on top. To really get a thick sound, I use a compressor (EHX Tone Corset) and (believe it or not) an EHX Ram's Head Big Muff Pi with the tone and sustain all the way down (there's also an EHX Hum Debugger). I'll attach some pictures with my pedal chain and amps in case anyone wants to see them.

For recording, I use a Zoom H6 with a stereo mic capsule (for both amps) and an SM57 (pointed at the Monoprice). The phone in the beginning is an old rotary phone I rewired to use as a microphone.

Jazz mandolin is a new project for me, so I'm definitely open to tips if anyone has suggestions (my background is in classical violin). I'm also going to keep doing more of these.
