I'm with you Willow 20 and I would like to see a pic of your used Gill.
I'm curious what exactly it is you want to see? Can you post a pic of yours?

I was just interested in the color, mine seems to be lighter than most.
There is a whole section of the Mandolin Archives devoted to Gilchrist.

Willow20—Can you post a picture?
Willow20—What a gorgeous mandolin! The back is indeed lighter looking than many Gils, but beautiful and great figure in the maple. Hope it gives years of enjoyment. —R.

Hey Willow20, I just saw the photos on your link above, and see that my "old" #624 is included in the "backs" photo with your #620. Anyway, I owned #624 until two days ago. Without question, #624 is the best-sounding mandolin that I have ever played, including a handful of other Gils and fancy-pants mandolins that I have owned over the past 20 years (and #624 has LOTS of volume). I suspect that your batch-brother #620 has similar tonal characteristics to #624.
The only reason that I sent #624 on its way, is that I have always much preferred the "feel" of A-model mandolins in my hands, and last fall I ran across a Monteleone Style-B ("A"-style mandolin) that did it for me in both tone and volume. I trust that you will have as-rewarding a mandolin journey with #620 as I had with #624 over the past 12+ years--here's to that (both your and my journeys): 'clink'.

P.S. Greg says "original" in his description, but Michael Heiden re-fretted #624 with EVO frets about three years ago--so, "even better" than original...and no apologies offered.
Sam, glad to see your F4jr. I’ve played some Gils, but don’t recall playing one of his ovals. Would love to. I’ve eyed a couple, I am a fan of ovals. You say it’s your fave. Compared to vintage Gibson’s? I think the unadorned version is very cool, simple & yes, inconspicuous.

It's always fun to see each year's new family photo.
Should have bought this one when I had the chance:

Here's an early one on Ebay. I really liked the red stain that he used on the one's I first encountered in the early 90's. This one is a little darker than the ones I remember.

Yeah, I have a 21 Gibson A (coincidentally also without logo, one of the steel truss rod covers like Marla Fibish has) and a 23 A-2. The 23 is a pretty incredible instrument and really hard to beat for richness, especially with thomastik strings on it, but I think the Gil is a little cleaner - though it’s a touch harder to play somehow - very sensitive to buzz if it’s not fretted cleanly. Also one thing about the Gil that I don’t love is that it’s worm under tuners and it’s hard to keep in tune.
So...hard to rank them all strictly in order, but I never thought I’d find a better tone than then the 23 Gibson and the Gil can absolutely get there in some ways.
