    Default cord wood 4 string

When stacking firewood last summer, I noticed some red maple with exceptional curl on a few chunks. They had not checked so I painted the ends to prevent checking and set them aside in the shop to dry. Only 16 inches long presented a bit of a challenge, so I had to design around that. A neat little 4 string came out of the effort. My new travel instrument!!!Attachment 193741

I’m always tempted to try that when I see figured firewood.

It's a fun project. I have done instrument tops in red spruce, western red cedar, red wood, koa, and yellow cedar, but never with maple. Red maple is somewhat similar to koa, I thought, only without the open pore grain and a bit brighter tone wise. It worked, bent, glued, and finished very nicely. I also had not done an instrument in that shape before. It seems to be a very efficient shape and I was surprised by the volume and decent sustain for a 8 1/2" bout.
I am going to go after more locally harvested woods as this little 4string has been a pleasant surprise.

I was very lucky the firewood had not end checked.
