    Default Greensleeves

Don't know if anyone here follows Aimee Nolte on the tube, if not she is a great resource for musical knowledge. She does mostly jazz but here is a great lesson on Greensleeves. I had worked this up on acoustic guitar some years back and ran across her doing Greensleeves and have been working on the tune on mandolin following Aimee here. There was a thread here about Circle of fifths which is covered here. This is a great exercise playing the melody in all the keys. Those familiar with Greensleeves already know the melody. Have a listen and play along, she takes it slow and easy.

I wrote a lesson on the three common minor scales we use - natural minor, harmonic minor and melodic minor - in a simple and practical method for getting them under your fingers. It may help to study that and then Amy’s lesson here will make perfect sense. Look for lesson six in the music theory series at http://www.markgunter.net/cool_stuff...ale-lesson-six and go through it with your mandolin in hand.

Thanks for that. I've used these from time to time, without knowing the theory behind them - that these accidentals created different scales, with names for them and commonly accepted uses. This helps explain why one often sees chord progressions which use, say, a resolution using an E7 to Am, instead of Em to Am. Very interesting.
