    Default Need a new mandaloun?

So my wife and I were watching the pre- Kentucky Derby stuff and up pops a horse named Mandaloun. Despite the thing not being an 8 string instrument tuned in 5ths, I decided to pick it as a winner (28-1?). No bet placed, I’m a thrrifty Yankee

Imagine my surprise when he finished 2nd, and that nobody else seems to have commented.

At least I’ve added a useful word to my vocabulary.

You spoke too soon. There was indeed a mention of this marvelous occurrence on this thread, which has been lingering (and malingering) far past any usefulness, beyond providing some modicum of comic relief.

But I'll bet no one cares about anything other than the pronunciation. It followed the Canadian/Scottish model - "Mandaloon." Go figure.
It's eminently searchable, being such a spelling is rather unusual. I do wish I'd known about him; I'd have put some money on him, just for a laugh. And then laughed all the way to the bank!

I too placed a mental bet on this horse, for the same reason. I am a horse-racing fan, and will follow this horse's career.

Racehorse names in the UK are something of an art-form; e.g. Lord Scrap, Shy Talk and, my personal favourite, “Selohesra”.

Huh. Not exactly the sort of thing that can run a mile and a quarter in two minutes. Or move at all, really. Wonder why?

Whereas "Mandolin" speaks of swiftness, especially in its traditional Kentucky use.

BTW, my favorite factoid of the race was something a commentator said offhand as they were loading the horses into the gates: Medina Spirit, the eventual winner, had never been passed. With so many talking about the favorite, Essential Quality, who ended up out of the money, I thought that was an overlooked piece of intel - kind of a horse-to-horse character trait. It ended up being true again, as he led wire-to wire. Even as Mandaloun was closing in on him toward the finish line, he kept pulling away. We'll see if this continues at the Preakness.

In Australia there was a racehorse named 'Euro Anchor'. A common term in Oz.

I actually hit it!! First time I've ever won more than a few bucks betting on the derby. I had both the #7 Mandaloun and the winner #8 Medina Spirit across the board wps and in another exacta bet. Combined I won a little less than $350. Go me!! I may finally treat myself to a bc pick.

If Mandoloun runs in the Preakness his odds will be much less than they were Saturday

If you put a little to it, you can afford one of those meteor rock picks posted the other day.

Sad to see Mandaloun is not running in The Preakness today.
