    That's actually from the classic 'Fettucine Modern Method of Mandolin', in the chapter on the advanced 'reverse overlap' hand position, mastered by so few.

    I think that's a forerunner of the Townshend Technique, in which the instrument is inverted, held by the neck near the peghead, and swung down to the stage.

    Or perhaps the photographer noticed that certain design elements in the mandolin echoed the model's features: the decal near the tailpiece, the dark expanse of the pickguard, and the sound hole symbolize the flower in her hair, the hair itself, and her parted lips. Perhaps ...

    That's not the proper position? That explains a lot!
