    Default Octave mandolin finished.

Just completed this build. Thought I'd try something a little different.

Beautiful piece of work. Love the abalone binding. Very crisp clean finish to the whole instrument.

I'm guessing you gave the project some thought before starting, and I wonder if you have any advice about the effect or use of different scale lengths. I've developed a curiosity about octave mandolins recently and encountered various scale lengths, both longer and as short as 20 inches. Thanks in advance.

Thanks, and yes, a lot of thought went into it as I had no plans to follow. In fact there was probably too much thought, as I've forgotten how I arrived at that particular scale length! I think it was a compromise, placing it somewhere in the middle of the normal range, say, between 20 and 23 inches. I also had to consider where this would place the bridge and was limited by the dimensions of the cedar set I had been given. Basically, I had been given the cedar by my friend Paul(Wildestcat on Ukulele Underground Forum), so everything was determined from that. I had drawn up a plan with X bracing and needed to adjust the X angle to place the bridge correctly so it's wings straddled the X. Also note that I made it a 12 fret body join, which again was to be considered in placing the bridge.

Lovely instrument, Mike. Beautifully built and finished. I like your fixed bridge too.

Yes it is Maurice, I ended up doing a trial string up with a temporary tailpiece, thanks and everything went well. The intonation is not far from perfect.

Hi Anglocelt, I'm sorry but it's not for sale . I don't have a website as I'm just a hobby builder who only builds a couple of instruments a year, although I have occasionally sold to friends and family. Thanks for enquiring. Mike
