Thread: Do you name your instruments?

No biggee....it's all good. Please don't think I was directing the criticism toward you, Sheila -- I was just commenting on the nature of certain questions that keep repeating. FWIW, Sheila was my mother's name.

I'd rather talk about this than Blue Chips, Tonegards, Snark tuners, Calton cases, well -- this list goes on and on, but we've worn out these topics, as well, but they keep popping up like a bad penny........

As I mentioned above, I did a bit of searching for previous threads on the subject, as you'd piqued my curiosity. I discovered a fair amount of ruminations from many members on more aspects of the subject than have been explored here. In a couple of threads from a decade ago, I saw I'd delved somewhat more deeply into the origins of my take on the matter. What I devised is an odd mixture of insight and tongue-in-cheek appraisal, rather befitting this notion, this anthropomorphic analysis of my feelings concerning what is, after all, an inanimate object:

Over the thirty years that I was spending so much time with my mandolin, Amanda Lynn, I found reasons to think of her as being imbued with human characteristics. She was trustworthy and true, and she was always there when I wanted her, and she worked with me to achieve common goals, and she never argued with me, and she travelled with me everywhere with no complaints, and she shared many good times and got me through many tough times, and she was always so kind and responsive to my touch, and she never turned me down when I wanted to play with her, and she would let me get a little rough with her sometimes and still not refuse me the next time I needed the solace only she could offer me, and she was most attentive to my wishes and dreams and hopes and desires and yearnings, and she was always ready to make beautiful music with me. A fine, cheerful, charming, cooperative, willing, exemplary companion. It seemed only proper she have a name. Perhaps it's a bit of a silly conceit, but I felt she deserved that much consideration, at the very least.
But that's just my opinion. I could be wrong. - Dennis Miller

I never name inanimate objects, with one exception: or vacuum cleaner robot is called "Franziska" (as you would have a name for a cleaning woman...).

The names I have been known to call my instrument (and myself) whilst practising would be deleted pretty quickly from this forum.

    That is a good thing...

I had a Stella parlor guitar. Might still have it, not sure. It would be in deep storage, nearly useless to me. I've got four fingers. What am I supposed to do with six strings?

My grandma's name was Stella. I didn't name this instrument; it was already named.

I named one. It is red and I call it Red Barker. The name fits that mandolin nicely.

No, not really. However, I have referred to this one as "the Jurassic Park mando". BTW, I also play Blue Chip picks.

I had a Michael Kelly Firefly flame that I called firefly. I have a Weber Gallatin I call Web and a Collings MTO I call Collings. I know, I am very creative with my names.
I can only play half as much as I want, because I only play half as much as I would like.

My husband was with me in my little orchard one morning and groaned when I referred to one of my trees as "Katy."
"Don't tell me you've named the trees," he pleaded.

"Um, no," I told him, feeling ever so self-righteous. "That's the name of the variety of apricot."

Naming musical instruments, of course, is a whole 'nother thing from naming trees, right? Right?!?

No! I don't name any of them. They came with their own names (Gibson A-2 snakehead, Brentrup A4C, etc.) and those that didn't have names are called oddball or unlabelled rosewood whatever. Actually I don't want to name them because I would only get too attached and never sell them.

No. I do not name inanimate objects.

I refer to my instruments by the maker or model such as the '22 Jr or the Seiffert, 00-15V, the Tele.

I didn't, until I got this new-to-me mandocello. It is a big, loud, resonant, beautiful but uncompromising instrument. It has a 25 3/4 inch scale and a 1 3/4 inch nut, so you either get your left hand moving well, or go home and shut up. The bridge has no adjustment, and there are no marking inlays on any of the frets - not the 5th, 7th, or even 12th. So you have to play this instrument the way IT wants -- but if you do, it rewards you.

Therefore, it made sense to name it after a Klingon warrior. I call her K'ehleyr.

Thumbs up Re: Do you name your instruments?

I've never named a guitar but I did name my mandolin. I call it 'Sting' after Bilbo and Frodo's short sword from THE LORD OF THE RINGS. I had Bruce Weber make me a custom truss rod cover. I love it.
