I've always named my mandolins and treated them as part of the family. I celebrate their birthdays too. "Lucy" is my latest mandolin, a beautiful Collings MF. My daughter named her for me.

(Oh, there's a Pac-rim beater that I named "El Kabong" some 15 years ago. Has it's name right there on the headstock too! And my left-handed strung Mid Mo, which is euphemistically called "Lefty".)

No, with one exception. My '71 Precision bass was named Humphrey when I was still in college (45 years ago), and old friends still ask after it by name. It was my first quality instrument. As I started playing more instruments, I stopped doing that. I don't name my wrenches and nut files, either.

One has a Rose McClung - she's called "Rose." Another has a "Fleur de Lis" McClung, she's "Fleur." The others have plain McClungs. They are "Mandolins."

Most of my vehicles and boats go without names, but once in a while one will reveal a name and then it would be rude not to use it. So similarly if one of my instruments decides to share its name with me I’ll use it, but I won’t attempt to make one up otherwise.
No. For whatever reason, and I’ve never felt compelled to name an instrument.

Nope. I never got into that - I don't name mandolins, guitars, motorcycles, other vehicles...
Agree with the person who said that you name pets and children.

There's at least one well-known precedent for that - two-time world heavyweight boxing champion George Foreman. He had five sons (and seven daughters ) and named them all "George!" They all have different nicknames, which must help considerably.

Oddly enough I was just having this discussion with a friend about our bikes. I have nicknames for two of my bicycles but none of my musical instruments, or at least the ones I have at the moment. I did have a guitar for a while that I named "Susie" but I have no memory of why I chose that or how that came to be. I regret that I sold it, which is true of several guitars or mandolins I've traded or sold (but not all- some I realized quickly weren't gonna work and I sold them as fast as I got 'em.)
I used to name my automobiles, based on their characteristics. My first Honda Element was named "Boxy," because it was. After I totaled that one, I bought another used Element, which is named "Citrus Fire," but that's only because that's the manufacturer's name for its orange paint job.

Not generally, but a long time ago I had a cheap Russian mandolin called Ivan - and yes, it was indeed terrible. Few instruments out-terrible a terrible mandolin from the player's point of view
I guess it would be pointless for me to mention this question gets asked every year on this forum (with many of the same responses by the same people, year after year!) I was going to mention the tv commercial (that I love to hate...) where the young woman mentions she named her car "Brad" -- but then I realized I'd already posted it before. So......
No harm done, just good clean fun, but it happens (really, really) often on this forum and everyone seems to treat it like a "brand new" question. (which I guess it is if you are a brand new member!)
The search engine on Mandolin Cafe isn't the greatest, BUT if you search a question on Google, usually the first response to almost any mandolin question is a previous posting on MC, FWIW.....
Yes, but not all have names yet. My Collings I named Eunice after my grandmother who gave me some money that I used to buy it 15 years ago. My other A5 I call Jerry after the maker. My snakehead I just call Sister Gibson (as in "Sister Gibson, testify!'). I don't usually talk to them though, and they only speak to me in Mandolese.
Named one after my late mom.
Many years ago named one after a lovely girl I knew.
Usually just call them by who made them since I don’t have duplicates in Mandos. Martin guitars are distinguished by “My Martin”, “The Little Martin” and “Leroy’s Martin”.(my wife inherited it from her dad)
Now firearms... Yes!!

Perhaps so. But you mentioned it anyway, so whatever the point is of making a pointless mention, there it is. Perhaps, that's just an awkward bit of sentence structure. Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps ...
It's true, as I searched a bit on the subject - this has come up before, plenty. I didn't recall, because I had been involved here less frequently than usual for a few years, then resumed during the lockdown. Perhaps it's not that big a deal, people having a bit of light-hearted fun and all.
Perhaps Sheila gets to slide on this, since she's been a member less than a year ...
