    Default My Gibson F5G....

    Howdy,
my FG5 (SN 01215030) was bought used by me a few years ago. I think this means it was built in 2005, right? I see a lot a people mention that their Gibson is signed by X Head Luthier. Where would this signature be? I do not see an obvious signature on the label. thanks!

They didn't put signature labels in the F5G circa 2005. You would only have one label as opposed to two labels. I don't think that's a 2005 label. My 2005 F5G serial number starts out 50107. That indicated January 7, 2005.

I think your mandolin was dated December 15, 2000 unless they changed the numbering system and Gibson did that on occasion.

If it had been signed it could have been inspected by three different people in that time period as far as I know.

That would have ben finished/labeled on December 15, 2000 and the third mandolin labeled that day. Charlie Derrington was the head luthier at that time and as mentioned Gibson did not sign the F5G's in those days. There were a few luthiers who signed the top on mandolins they carved the plates, Sim Daley being one of them.

My first serious mandolin was a 2000-2001 F5-G, It was a good one! I sure wish I had her back, it resides in Europe I think.

No signature, but that's a good time for Gibson builds with Charlie overseeing the operation...
