    Default Beatles tunes

I have a few under my belt, but always looking to add a few more...
    Currently my list is:
    Something
    Oh darling
    I've just seen a face
    In my Life
    Dear Prudence
    Don't let me down
    Help
    Hey Jude
    Let it be
she came in thru the bathroom window
    while my guitar gently weeps
And currently working on, A day in the life, but it's a ball breaker as a solo instrument...

What are your favs that work for mandolin?

Our group has been performing "When I'm 64." Its far from being my favorite Beatles tune, but it has grown on me in ways that I like!

One song I would love to do a close-copy arrangement of "Come Together" with the usual bluegrass instrument voices.

All Beatles songs are my favorites, I've been learning them as they come out since 1963, when I was 7.

I've done Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds and found the little keyboard riff at the beginning to be 1000% easy and better than on guitar. Fun chords and works well.

I like Here Comes the Sun and Eleanor Rigby. Those both work really well on mandolin.

Your ready list is a lot more impressive than mine, Trip. I agree with an earlier suggestion, add Eleanor Rigby, it’s fun on mandolin.

Check out what Tom Wright did with Sun King on his 10 string:

Trip I was also trying A Day in the Life, though I think I like it better on mandola, anyway - still a long way to go an an arrangement for that,

I saw some folks mention Elanor Rigby and Lucy in the Sky, I also did Back in the USSR on octave, and we used to do 8 Days a Week at jams.

Matt Flinner was teaching Mother Nature's Son in his octave class, which was very cool.

I always loved the Mike Marshall version of Because.

Listen to cuts from Beatle Country by the Charles River Valley Boys, available on YouTube, if you want some bluegrass arrangements. After 55 years, still a great album. Joe Val's mandolin instrumental work on She's a Woman is really tasty.

My list of Beatles songs I've covered, with a few notes:

Across The Universe - a dear friend's favorite song, so I worked it up and recorded it for her
The Ballad Of John And Yoko - often done in my band, The Love Lane Gang
Can’t Buy Me Love - used to do this in an old duo; my partner's idea
Birthday - great riff, in G
Cry For A Shadow - worked on this for The Love Lane Gang but I don't think we ever played it at a gig
    Eight Days A Week
From Me To You - first time I heard a bluegrass version of a Beatles song - Monroe Doctrine - a light went on in my head
Get Back - often done at jams
Here Comes The Sun - from busking days with my duo, The Loons
In My Life - one of my go-to's
I’ve Just Seen A Face - very often done at jams
I Want To Hold Your Hand - from busking days with my duo, The Loons; just crossed my mind one day and figured it out, key change and all
Maxwell's Silver Hammer - often done in my band, The Love Lane Gang (never did the third verse)
    Mother Nature’s Son
    Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
Rocky Raccoon - very often done at jams
Slow Down - yes, it's a cover; closely associated with The Beatles; often done in old band, Travelling Light Blues Band; great riff, in G
    Something
When I'm 64 - often done in my band, The Love Lane Gang
    Yellow Submarine
    You Won’t See Me

There might be more, though this seems complete. I didn't include a bunch of songs they covered, just the one.

Worked this up on the occasion of what would have been my dear, departed brother's 64th birthday. I used the mandola because I liked this fingering, but it was the wrong key for my voice with the mandolin.

Nice thread for some great song ideas, I have alot to work on. I do a crosspick of Norwegian Wood and a chord melody of You’ve got to Hide your Love Away.

Norwegian Wood in D is fun to play.
I also play a weird gypsy swing version of Eleanor Rigby that's pretty cool. I should do a video of that to share...

Steve Earle has done a few Beatles covers, especially "I'm Looking Through You" on "Train a-Comin"

Here's a live festival version with (looks like to me) Tim O'Brien on mando.

Definitely Tim o’Brien but what’s the mandolin he’s playing?

I was once offered a ticket to see the Beatles but didn’t bother going - does that make me old?

Yep, that's Tim O all right. And no idea. Definitely not the Nugget. Down in front!

For that matter, what is Steve strapping on at the end for the next song? The clip runs out before we can get a good look.

I thought about this when I was making my list, as it is indeed kind of bluegrass-y, and as Steve says, may well have been what Sir Paul had in mind for it. Then I remembered I may have thought this way, but I hadn't actually played it, not by myself anyway. But the other song from "Rubber Soul" that veers into this area, "I've Just Seen A Face," is very much in my wheelhouse and repertoire, and comes up often at jams.

Works well on Mandolin. Especially so on 8 string electric Mandolin.
