Default Wondering over brassposts on my Mandolinetto

Has anybody an idea what the brassposts on the endpiece and the one under the top are for?

The pieces on the tailpiece were probably part of a sleeve guard but the one inside really stumps me.

I thought so as well but haven't been able to find one single one with a cover there

Poul, just speculation on my part but perhaps these are part of a do-it-yourself repair. The brass posts are probably the head of a screw that maybe pulls some parts together like a small crack in a brace or a loose end block so as to stop a buzz or rattle. You could remove them and see what may happen. Have you seen other instruments like yours with these posts?

The sleeve guards fall off easily and get lost. I have had a couple of bowlbacks that came with those and they do hook onto the tailpiece.

The bigger question for me is the one inside. Unless that has some sort of adjustable neck I have no idea why that one would be there.

It sits below the soundhole in the brace there.

Maybe there is bolt in the pickguard that then is fastened with the round brass nut?. When I remove the strings, I'll try to get a mirror in there.

The ones on the endpiece are probably for a cover but I would very much like to see that cover. No other cover I know of, connects this way.
I have however seen the posts on other mandolinettos on the net, so they look standard.

Finial like on a lamp? Resembles acorn nut, or cap nut, but meant to be finger tightened. Assembly aid?

The piece inside the soundhole - it's solid brass, yes? And it's vertical - that is, going from top toward back - yes?

I wonder if it's supposed to be a strap button. Yes, an odd way to do it, but I don't see one on the butt, where it should be, unless the little bit that's lowest on the string holder is the remnant of a broken-off strap button. Could be that's why someone came up with this idea, as a work-around. Can you turn it with your fingers? That is, is it screwed into the brace? If so, see if it's long enough to go through the brace and into the top. It could be a means of reinforcing the brace, It would have to be a pretty exact length to perform that function without protruding through the top.

OK, hard to tell from that angle. So there's no strap button on the tailpiece. This supports my theory, somewhat ...

I guess the most pertinent question is, has anyone seen this on another instrument? And is it factory-installed, or an after-market addition?

There is a mandolinetto listed at www.creamcitymusic.com that has a tailpiece with the cover over it. Maybe something like this. I found it with a google search for mandolinetto for sale.
