Using the classical guitar method of attachment works well for nylon strings but steel core strings could be a problem. Technically that's a knot. Cool looking instrument you have there. I would love to hear what it sounds like.

Would ball-end strings not just go straight into this tailpiece? Not even sure if anyone makes suitable gauges in nylon.
I'm playing all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order. - Eric Morecambe

Yes but the classical method needs a different endpiece than a standard mandolin piece. That is what I'm looking for

    Sorry not my instruent.

That photo is just an illustration found on the inet.

I am installing Aquila 1M strings without any loop or ball. That's why I'm asking for an endpiece which will enable an installation a la classical guitar.

Perhaps a trapeze style tailpiece with a wooden stop bar. This picture came from this thread. I think this one is on an archtop OM

Is that a real instrument in the OP pic? I've never seen top grain like that. It's not straight or book matched. Looks like oak kitchen cabinets. I suppose a tailpiece could be made like that one.

I have thought of making something. I really just need 8 holes with rounded edges. Then I could terminate with string beads, to avoid too narrow bends of the string.

Question Re: Endpiece for nonlooped strings, without having to make knots

I live by the water, on the Columbia River Estuary. what would anyone from a sailing country have against tying knots?

I live in Paul Elvsrøms home country and as a sailor and climber, you and I know that a knot will weaken the string/rope to 50-75% of it's straight value, depending on the knot.

So better avoid knotting on strings that are rumoured to break easily.

Consider a Custom Fabrication of a tailpiece, like the tuning pegs on the other end,..

you would secure the string by winding it around several times to secure it.. a capstan as it were ..

Exactly what I was thinking. I'm still hoping for a ready made though.
