Thread: Wolverine Bowlback- Beautiful Instrument

    Default Wolverine Bowlback- Beautiful Instrument

Apparently, sold by the Grinnell Brothers out of Michigan. This is a beautiful instrument although the price may be ambitious. I have not looked too closely at its condition but a quick scan shows no immediate major concerns but I will look more closely. I think it was probably made by Weymann judging by the headstock/tuners but I am sure others can confirm or deny this as appropriate.

Asking is ambitious; bowl backs get no respect! Is nice piece of furniture, the photos do not show the very critical neck alignment, and I’d sure hate to disturb all that inlay if surgery was needed.

I love the craftsmen ship that went into some of these old bowlbacks! The inlay work is simply gorgeous!

It is a joy to behold- and one hopes it is not in need of neck work but the price is far too high and will probably come down. I would reckon half the current asking price might be more realistic but even then, the price might still be too high for the market.

Great peghead decal artwork. Interesting treatment of the nut.

C F Martin made some guitars for Grinnell Brothers that were labeled "Wolverine." This one doesn't look to me like a Martin build, though.

    Definitively not a Martin.

I have a "Wolverine" labeled mandojo though I have no idea who might have made it.

Curious thing about this mandolin is that the label says "Wm. Wolfe, Detroit".

Did Wolfe have some type of relationship with the Grinnell firm?
