Is there any version that even comes close to the original Dead recording with Grisman taking his iconic mandolin break? I think not...

Very possibly not, not from Grateful Dead, anyway. They slowed the song down so much it was a bit of a snooze, and they didn't have Grisman on board very often. Weren't there Garcia-Grisman tours, or at least shows? No idea how they did it. But autoplay cued up this 1993 appearance on Letterman for me, and though it's slowed down, Dawg takes a nice ride on it - but then passes off the second half to Jerry.



But stick around after the song. It seems Dawg was sitting in with the band - maybe Jerry too, can't tell - so there are some tasty licks from him on "As Tears Go By."
