Thread: REELS: What are your favorites?

Default REELS: What are your favorites?

I'm still a bit new to this music. I really enjoyed picking out Jessamyn's Reel by Chris Thile, and now I discovered Amanda's Reel by Kenny Smith which I really enjoy.

So far, Amanda's reel is a bit more work to get up to speed, but I want to sue it as a technique exercise and also add a few more reels to my practice routine.

What are some of your favorites?

You could try this one, quite a good exercise: https://thesession.org/tunes/114
-actually I quite like it as a hornpipe.

Pacific Slope as played by Patti Kusturok , a tune which I first heard as "Cambridge Hornpipe", played by Davy Tulloch, and goes by several other names too.

I prefer Waterworks Lamson, or a good old school click & Pawl.

Nothing finer than St. Ann's Reel. And believe me, she is. (Real that is)

Spootiskerry, Willafjord and The Barrowburn Reel. All great session favourites in my part of the world.

What I'd consider favorite reels is always in flux, as I get excited by new ones I'm learning and then let some old favorites fall off the back end of memory. Anyway, here are some favorites I've been playing a lot lately. None of these except maybe Beare Island are really local session standards (back when they were active), just tunes my fiddler S.O. and I enjoy playing:

Irish: Beare Island, Seán Sa Cheo, The Nine Points of Roguery, The Cat that Ate the Candle.

Scottish: Maggie's Pancakes, The J.B. Reel, Tarbolton Lodge, Ian Greene of Greentrax, Zeeto the Bubbleman, Prince Charlie.

    There's multiple reels?

I thought it was one reel with 36,000 different names.
