Default Replacement for Loar Tailpiece Cover

I was commissioned to make and engrave what I understand to be a period correct tailpiece cover for a Lloyd Loar mandolin. It took me four tries to get one to fit right but I was not happy with the engraving - so like they say, ”Fifth time’s a charm”.

I made it from 22 gauge nickel silver. I understand some of the original ones were silver plated over the nickel silver. This one is not plated. I’m not planning to make others. Gibson may overlook one handmade piece for a special restoration project, but I doubt they’d look favorably on a marketing effort using their logo.

Love to see shots # 2 and # 3 to see how you did the work. Cool vise, seeing the layout lines (and the cloudy swirly stuff - what is that?) provides a better idea of how you managed to do such nice work.

Yes, that vise is an engraving block or engraving ball. That one is on a turntable so I can always keep the area I'm working on in view of the microscope I'm working through. The 'cloudy swirly stuff' is just a cake of white water color paint (aka Chinese White) I apply with my finger. It takes the glare off the metal and provides a surface that can be drawn on. The layout lines are deep carved to make it easy to control where the bend is and make it so I can get a clean, sharp bend. I have a special pliers that are like a mini brake to bend the sides with.
