Thread: El Dorado Hopi strap

    Default El Dorado Hopi strap

Recently scored the mountaintop F5 in this killer Gilchrist and wanted to find a strap befitting of such a work of art. So I contacted Bill at El Dorado and commissioned a hand made Hopi style beaded leather strap and wow, it is insanely good. These two are a match made in heaven. Can’t recommend Bill enough for this kind of work. Absolutely killer stuff

I'll bet they look great together! I'll bet that I am not the only one who would like to see an artsy photo of Gil and Hopi

I have a number of El Dorado guitar straps and would love to see your El Dorado (and the Mandolin, of course!)

Very nice mandolin and strap. The time involved in making that strap. A labor of love for sure. Enjoy.

That's a great looking and finely crafted strap that goes extremely well with your Gilchrist!

Same as Poul, I am wondering how those beads are attached to the leather(?)

I am not sure how they attached the beads to the leather, but it does look like they are inlayed into the leather so they are flush with the strap.

Most leather can be worked/carved much like wood. I'm sure they shaved or ground a groove matching the specs of the bead work. The right glue and Voilà, you have a masterpiece.

I used to do a lot of leather work decades ago. It carves much easier than wood, tho different.

My El Dorado mandolin strap arrived today, and is really nice. I did not go with the beaded version, as the Native American beading seemed a mismatch with a 1919 F4. Now if he did something in some sort of Art Deco pattern, I would reconsider. Absolutely beautiful work.

I like the snakeskin strap. The beading is great, too. Cool looking work.

Making beaded strips is actually pretty easy, just takes a little care and some time. It does make for a really nice strap. Seeing the El Dorado strap makes me want to unearth my bead loom and supplies and build one for myself. It looks, to me, that the El Dorado version is built using a solid leather back, with a top of two narrow strips and a beaded center. A very nice piece of craftsmanship.
