    Default Straps for A style

I just bought my first mando, an Eastman 505, about a week ago, and am looking into a good strap. I'd like to try one that can be tied underneath the fretboard and see how I like it, but I don't know how to search for one like that. (I also plan on trying out one that attaches via the headstock and it looks like the Banjo Ben Clark General store has one that's about $20.) Any recommendations? By the way, I'd like to find one that isn't too expensive, under $25 preferably. Thanks!

I make these straps out of 1mm Dyneema(will take 80 kg) and a button(it could also be round).
It can go around the head or under the fretboard and then you can attach any standard strap to it.

I ordered one from this company. Nicely made, inexpensive, works well, and if you should be able to find a color and pattern you like.

And you can do this with any style of strap: woven, flat, etc.

Question Re: Straps for A style

A bit of 1/8" rope & knots work fine.. I tie around the middle of the headstock, not right above the nut,

Para cord (boot lace look type(?) and a spring toggle, forming a loop can make the length adjustable .

toggle-loop would be behind your back, unseen if performing, standing, & the look from the front matters..

Like these very much, use the cord loop end around the middle of tuners, comfortable, lots of choices of design and colors. Stays at the length chosen! https://www.souldier.us/CustomMandolinStraps.aspx

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm curious, what's the difference between using a leather strap vs something like nylon (I think that's what the legacy straps are made of)? For you A folks, does anyone use your strap under the fretboard? Or would the headstock be more secure?

I prefer a leather lace looped under an elevated fretboard. If not possible, then a lace looped under the strings at the headstock (but not directly behind the nut). I am not fond of having a strap button on the heel, but some folks like that.

I like the way the headstock holds the mandolin. It seems better than at the body.

If you have the money, get a Lakota Leather strap. If you don't, make one from paracord. It's easy and fast. NFI.

    Simply Brilliant!
Thanks for sharing this. I've got to locate my splicing needles now.

The way you have it in the picture, is it above or below the nut?

In that configuration it looks like it would hinder the left hand in 1st position.

Above, although I tested the strap on a guitar where I placed it, under the strings close to the 12. fret(using a single strain) and it works(if the fret is higher than 1 mm)!! But I would need a tighter knot, so it doesn't loosen when without any load.

It's very thin and should of course be rotated so the end going through the loop is on the side of the fretboard and pushed up over the volute. It's just a photo of the principle.

Here's what I do. I posted this before somewhere here. You can move the strap to another tuner for fine adjustments.

three 72-in-long boot laces. You get to pick the material, 'cause they come in rawhide and pink parachord and everything inbetween. I use three and keep one of the ends longer, to enable the peghead and tailpiece connections. No need for three equal-length ends!

I go around the peghead, but not by the nut - between one or two tuning pegs. You could leave the single tail even longer and go under the fretboard extension, if you have that sort of mandolin. I just don't and I do.

Made my own with some leather from the leather store, braiding was a challenge at first and my hands were very tired but it was fun and turned out very comfortable. I wish I would have braided it a bit longer though. Click image for larger version.

Looks nice John, I have done that braid before, choose to be lazy and keep it flat on mine.

I have an Eastman MD 505 and use this D'addario leather strap. One end attached to the end pin and then shoe lace tied under the elevated fretboard end. Recommended by Baron Collins-Hill of Mandolessons.com.

Piece of shoelace holding a regular strap just behind the nut. Doesn't get in my way at all. Mando stays nice and balanced.
