    Default Left-Handed 3-Point F4 Mandolin

I thought I'd share these photos of a rare left-handed F4 that sold here in New Zealand 3 years back.

It was me bidding against another guy - I wanted to buy on spec (I'm right handed) with the possibility of trading it to the USA for a nice right-hand instrument. The other guy was a local musician wanting to buy it for his son who is a left-handed trad player who plays in Irish/Celtic bands. He was the right guy to win the auction, and I passed at about US$2000.

Anyway, here are some photos, since we can't send them to the Mandolin Archive anymore.

Note: the previous owner had it strung right-handed!

Yep that's a rare beast! I've heard of a lefty 30's F-7 that resides in Canada. The late Mike O' Reilly told me about it maybe 15 years ago. Has any lefty vintage F-5's surfaced anywhere? I've never heard of or seen one.

A very short list of lefties over at the archive:

Am I right (!) in assuming left-handed instruments in general were very rare in that era? Certainly many left-handed musicians, even today, learn to play right handed.

And I'm pretty sure with classical instruments (violin, cello), there was never traditionally an option. Maybe there is today.
