    Default The "Essential" Chris Thile

The online music journal where I work, San Francisco Classical Voice, mostly covers classical music, opera, and jazz, with occasional forays into folk and traditional music from around the globe.

We run an "Essential" series where our writers offer an introduction to the recorded works and video performances of various artists. We've never included a mandolinist before, and in honor of Thile's upcoming performance at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley with Yo-Yo Ma on cello, Stuart Duncan on fiddle, Edgar Meyer on bass, and vocalist Aoife O’Donovan, I pitched this overview of Chris Thile's work.

I'm sure dedicated listeners will have their own (and perhaps quite different) lists of "essentials," but here's my attempt to provide an intro to the uninitiated.

Very nicely done! His playing is the main reason I picked up the beast in the first place, and continue to find inspiration as a player and musician. Thank you for this.

Wow! Yes, very nice piece, Paul. My one different "essential" would be Punch Brother's, "Julep." Not a virtuoso piece, but haven't heard any song as loving, haunting and lush as this in a long time. Another personal favorite, although appealing to a narrower audience, would be the song, "Falsetto."

Everything in Chris Thile is essential, that guy more than a virtuoso is a genius!
Music washes away from the soul the dust of every-day life. Auerbach.
The rejection of 'the others' is a tragedy of the human being; If it comes from emigrants, an added horror!

I opine that "Not Our First Goat Rodeo" is the best second-album title ever. Surely they set that up years earlier with the first album.

His performance of "Another New World", for me, stands out in so many ways. It's truly mesmerizing and leaves you a little stunned.

Thanks for sharing this great article!
I'm gonna check out all the vids I didn't already know as soon as I get back from work and the kids are tucked in.

On a kinda unrelated note: Anyone know why the company logo on Grismans Mandolin is covered up on the photo?
