    Default 10 Estonian folk dances

My friend Jim once asked me if I play any Estonian music. I reviewed what I have done in recent years and really, there was very little Estonian music there. So I took a thick book with Estonian folk dances from the shelf and arranged 10 dances. Here they are:

    Thank you, Jim for asking!

That hybrid picking style of yours is so distinctive, Toomas. I love the harmonies you create with your finger-picking technique.

Nice music and mandolin playing, Toomas! Your flatback sounds very fine in your hands.
I miss one Estonian folk tune, though, the waltz Tősine eesti labajalavalss.

I am very impressed with your finger picking technique. One question about it -- do you ever use the back of your finger nail to strike down on the string? It looked to me like you might occasionally.

Thank you for posting. I enjoyed listening (and watching).

Thank you! I used different techniques to set these dances. In general, if two notes at once, I play with a pick and a finger, and if there is a single or more notes between two notes at once, I play mostly with a pick. Finger strokes are all upstrokes and pick strokes according to different situations. I never using the back of fingernail. I guess it was a difficult story, so ask if anything was unclear...

Thank you! "Labajalavalss" is a very well-known dance in Estonia, with many slightly different variants and different settings and this video is a nice one. Am I trying to make my own version of it next time ...
