Thread: My first scratch build f5

Default My first scratch build f5

This is my first post here after lurking off and on for several years. Guitar building is my comfort region.

I just started a Loar copy build (barley started) and I was going to share a couple pics here in this thread for comment.

    How can I do that?

Sorry.. your dealing with a newbe here.

When you post hit the third icon from the right at the top and it will open to allow uploading from your computer. If you hover over the icons they'll say what the are.
Anxious to see and follow the build. Good Luck!

Is there a way to add pics inside this thread?

After you hit the 3rd icon from the right, click on "From Computer" at the upper left of the window that pops up.. Then you should be able to upload your pictures, as long as they are in jpg, jpeg, png, or gif format.

There is a line of icons directly above the first line of text that you type, starting with a square with an "A/A" inside of it. The picture posting icon is a square looking thing with bumps on the corner, and is the third from the right, at least on my computer.

Here's some pictures (click them to make them bigger) that may help. In the reply box below, first click on the icon:

This pop up box will appear:

Three things need to happen - first, click on the "From Computer" tab. Second, click on "Choose File" and select a photo from your desktop/other folder. Third, and most important you need to then click on the words "Upload File(s)."

Then something like this will appear in your message box:

Size:	25.0 KB
ID:	195698

You won't see a photo. Don't be concerned. When you click "post reply" it will be there in the published reply.

If you have multiple photos, you have to repeat the above exercise for each photo. It's a little more clunky than some forums, where you can just paste the photo directly into your message

The above instructions assume you're using a desktop computer....

Click on "go advanced" then click on the paperclip icon in the upper right of the bar. There you can choose files from your computer and upload them, click the "Done" button and you are good to go.

thanks guys for the help! things went better on the computer vs the android.

The mold and rim are still work in progress...

The back was said to be sugar maple, I think its red maple. I purchased it anyway because it looks good to me.

    The top is mysterious..
I purchased it 15 years ago from Randy Lucus. This top was cut from salvage of a feed mill constructucted around 1900 up state NY. A lot of the salvage was red spruce which I used on guitars. There was another specie that was never identified, also very good guitar wood. Im guessing its either White Spruce or Black Spruce.

    Back joining today..

Had to tune-up the plane before getting the joint right, this is not easy like guitar building!

The hair drier and scrap piece of maple (heat tunnel) was used to heat the joint before HHG.

That's a very thin plate! 8mm? I start about twice that thick...

I agree with Marty and noticed it right away. This piece wood will not make an F5 mandolin. I start with minimum of 3/4".

Looks to me like there has been some wood removed but it seems like there is enough for the arching...
