Thread: Classical Mandolin Skype/Zoom/Online lessons

    Default Classical Mandolin Skype/Zoom/Online lessons

I'm a New-ish mandolin player that has been picking for a bit more than a year at this point. I started with fiddle tunes, playing mostly from tab but more recently working on notation. However, I've really come to love the sound of classical mandolin.

I'm aware of a multitude of self study and semi-self study resources, such as Catarina's artist work, but i'm looking for a teacher that provides classical style mandolin one-on-one lessons online.

In person would also be fantastic, but I'm not holding my breath for anyone local in the Portland, Oregon metro region.

Any guidance and suggestions would be appreciated .

    Peter

In case you haven't already, might be a good idea to reach out to the Portland Mandolin Orchestraa to see if they have someone that teaches.

There are a number of fine teachers in the Portland area; I am a member of the Oregon Mandolin Orchestra and the Classical Mandolin Society of America. Rather than list names here, please contact me.

Thanks for both of your help. I was able to find a local instructor to help get me going in the right direction.

    Curious--who did you connect with?

I'm remote to Portland but curious too, and I hope your lesson experience is fulfilling. And welcome to mandolin in nerd-music context!

Oops, sorry for taking so long to get back, don't check my own threads often enough, apparently. Thanks to a nice email from Jim Imhoff I was able to find the local instructor Tim Connell who offers lessons virtually and happens to live in PDX area. I haven't actually reached out to him as I'm squirreling away a little extra money for the lessons fees. But after my next pay check I plan on shooting him an email, or signing up for his Online Mando lesson program, depending on how his one-on-one lesson availability aligns with my schedule.

Tim is awesome. Be mindful: I don't think he could be categorized as a classical specialist, don't know how familiar he is with that specific repertoire or with associated specialized techniques, but he is a fantastic all-'round musician. I'm really fond of his old-school jazz album, Stumptown Swing. Enjoy the experience.

Tim is a graduate of the Berklee School of Music in Boston. He is indeed a specialist in Choro, Swing, etc. but also a master player with a fine background in classical.

I was fortunate to sit in on the San Diego Classical Mandolin Camp the year Tim was an instructor. He's an excellent, natural teacher.

Actually, Tim is a New England Conservatory grad. And an excellent pianist as well.

As with any instructor, his teaching demeanor is not for everyone.
