    Default Gloat gloat gloat ...

Well, it may have finally happened ... I bought from an online retailer tonight what was purportedly a Fender Mando-Strat ... but judging strictly from the photos that accompanied the listing, it may well actually be a vintage Mandocaster.

I will know more when it arrives.

I should have nabbed the listing photos so I could discuss why I think this is an original Mandocaster. But they are already gone.

We'll find out. It's possible that the photos were just placeholders and what I'll get is an actual Mando-Strat ... but I'll be OK if that happens. The point is that I paid a Mando-Strat price for something I had reason to believe was worth 4 times that much.

Good luck on your gloat or else enjoy your non-gloataceous mandolin.

I'm sure I've seen labels like that, on Chianti and such.

There is indeed a California brand, Mandolin Wine. NFI

I might have to make do with a bottle of Matryoshka stout from Fort George Brewery, or maybe another Kalinov tarragon lemonade, but I'll definitely kick up my heels one way or another.

The anticipation of finding out is half the fun. Either way, you'll have a nice instrument. Thanks for taking us along!

Well, as it turns out ...

    It really is a MandoStrat.

it has an "Original Contour Body" sticker on the headstock, which is part of what made me think it might be vintage. That sticker was used on Mandocasters in the '60s. Never seen one on a MandoStrat before. In the photos I could see that the tuners were wrong for a vintage Mandocaster, but the sticker looked wrong for a MandoStrat.

It was also pictured in what I took to be a vintage rectangular case with orange lining. Well, it is in a case, but the case is a brand-spankin'-new repro from G&G. It even has a Fender logo on the outside.

So ... not the score I thought it was, but will still probably sell for close to twice what I paid for it.

I did go and buy some more Kalinov sodas. I will have one when they're cold enough.
