Default another Republic Highway 49 coming

couldn't adjust to the Royall pear shape so I sold it. I had no complaints about it's performance or quality.
I sold a Republic a few years ago and have been kicking myself ever since, so I ordered another. I also ordered a "little Martin" TKL case from Elderly...a perfect fit. I have a set of Waverly's that will fit as well.

I was considering the Royall long scale(26") but the 22.5 should be way more comfortable.

gotta learn to use a slide.

    what tunings are recomended?

Republic got here today. I like the aged nickel finish. It's a little louder than the Royall, using the same strings. I changed out the undersized tuners. I am playing with a glass slide on my little finger. so far, it sounds like crap, but it's not the guitar's fault. It is great. little wider nut than Royall and I like the slot head. It came in an excellent canvas soft case which promptly went on craigslist. the little Martin case fits like a glove. both Republic and Royall are good values but the Republic, with it's larger body has a bigger sound.

I had a Republic Mandolian for the longest time. As well made as any of them but it did need a serious setup and a new biscuit bridge. The one that came was a soft wood so my luthier made one with the proper ebony/maple blend and the instrument sprung to life. It was part of a downsizing exercise but I've been tempted by one of these tenors.

thanks, good to know..I'll watch out for that. I think I will buy a biscuit bridge blank for that possibility too. I remain very happy with it, so far.

my hwy 49 tenor has an aged polished nickel finish that is really nice. my bright nickel one was too bright and shiny. the neck is a plain wood with a nice dark brown finish and is very comfortable. my only gripe is the black side dot at the 9th fret. I drilled this out and replaced it with a white one which is invisable on the white neck binding and adding a new black dot at the 10th, where I want it.
the tuners are typical of the Republic and Royall imported guitars...they function reasonably well when new but the shafts are undersized and tuning can be tedious. I replaced mine with some Waverly slot head pegs for a huge improvement. this required a 1/4" drill bit.
the canvas gig bag is really nice, for a gig bag and once I cut the embroidered Republic logo out I will try to give it away. The TKL "little Martin" hard case fits perfectly but was not designed for the extra weight of the resonator so I removed the plastic handle from the case and replaced it with a nice leather one from Elderly, mounting it a little farther down the body to compensate for the weight increase and glued the pretty embroidered logo to the storage bin lid. It is as though the case was built for the Republic hwy 49.
I'm using nylon strings for DGBE tuning. Thomastik-Infeld .016 and .024 wound nylon for the B and E with .033 and .028 wound normal tension classical guitar strings for the D and G. the guitar is loud, has great sustain and tone. The intonation is good.
I pick with my fingernails and don't use a flat pick and this set-up works very well for me.
not much progress with the glass slide though...
